Making Sense of Sounds
Wondering when your child should be making certain sounds? Speech sound milestones can be confusing especially when there are so many different ways in which a child can communicate. Here are some easy ways to remember the general developmental norms for all sounds produced in the English language.
The bar chart above shows the ranges of age groups in which each sound can develop. For example, the sound “ch”, can develop between ages 3.5 up until age 7. Simpler sounds like “m” or “b” will develop first around ages 1.5 to 3. (Which is why some kids’ first words are “mama” or “baba”!)
The chart above is another way to look at the milestones of sounds a child can reach at certain ages. All kids are different, some little ones develop certain sounds earlier or later and all variations of development within these time frames are considered to be within normal limits!
